MetNetDB development

Synonym generation

Overview

"Abbreviation rule" window and "synonym candidate" window help users create new synonyms based on the abbreviation rules and review the new synonym candidates.

Abbreviation rules

Abbreviation rules are a set of rules to generate new synonyms in MetNetDB. Each rule contains a short term and a long term. The program generate new synonyms by replacing short term with long term and vise versa for every name and synonym in MetNetDB.

To create new rule in "abbreviation rule" window, the user first input short term and long term in "short term" text field and "long term" text filed, then click "insert rule" button. To delete a rule, choose one from "rule list' table and click "delete rule" button. To modify a rule, choose one from "rule list" table, change it in the "short term" text field and "long term" text field, then click "modify rule" button.

Not all rules should be applied to MetNetDB to create new synonyms. There are three levels of rules, "do not apply", "check by user" and "automatically insert". "do not apply" means when user click "generate synonyms" button, these rules will be ignored and not be used to generate new synonyms. "check by user" means the new synonyms generated by those rules will be labeled as synonym candidates and user should review the new synonyms in "synonym candidate" window. "automatically insert" means the program will generate new synonyms and integrate them to MetNetDB without user intervene. After all rules are specified by one generation rule in "rule list" table, the user can click "generate synonyms" button to create new synonyms for MetNetDB.

Synonym candidate

The new synonyms generated by abbreviation rules can be reviewed in "synonym candidate" window. In the "candidate list" table, the first column displays the name of entities; the second one displays the synonym candidate for the entity; the third column can let the user approve the candidate by checking the box or reject by unchecking the box.

The user can approve all candidates by click "check all" button, or reject all by clicking "uncheck all" button. After all candidate in the current list are reviewed, the user can click "approve" button to let program to integrate the new synonym into MetNetDB. Since the candidate are too many to load in current table at one time, every time, the user need click "extract 500" to get 500 synonym candidates to review.
